Aquaflame Collared Lizards are a US native species of reptile. They are quite beautiful with the males bearing aqua-blue coloration to their bodies and a yellowish head with brown-black spotting on their backs. We currently have captive born individuals available now. No more will be available until next summer so get yours now. Some are too young to show their true colors, but they will soon color out. These lizards make interesting and easy to care for pets requiring a simple desert set up complete with lighting. Their smaller size makes them even more attractive for apartment living where space can be sparse.
Aquatics plants have always been an attraction to aquarium owners. They add so much to the overall beauty of an aquarium and many even keep plant only aquatic gardens. Aquarium plants can also aid in improving water quality by removing many harmful nitrites and nitrates. Beauty and function, not too common in todays world. Historically these aquariums have proven to be difficult to maintain, but recent improvements in aquarium substrate made specifically for planted aquariums have paved new roads to ease our path. Let us help you find your green thumb.
On the marine front, Sargassum Frog Fish have recently joined our underwater world. These interesting creatures are members of the Angler family. Yes, Anglers. They have a unique adaptation on their first dorsal spine that mimics a food item to lure unsuspecting fish close to their wide mouths only to become meals. Another unique feature is their pectoral and pelvic fins which act as feet that thy use to “walk” and hold onto seaweed fronds that are their homes. They are perfectly camouflaged as well to match their seaweed surroundings.
Baby birds are normally associated with spring, but here at Uptown Birds we hatch out new babies all year long. Each week offers a new surprise to what we may hatch out next. Our newest hatchlings are baby Budgies and Lovebirds. These babies are currently being hand-fed and can be seen everyday inside the store. We should have new lorikeet and parrotlet hatchlings within the next week. Come by to see what’s new.
Baby Greater Vasa Parrot, come see her while you can! These uncommon parrots from Madagascar are one of the most unusual parrots alive.
Desert Reptile Exhibit: Just two weeks ago we at Uptown Birds unveiled the window display to our new desert reptile exhibit. Inside this exhibit you will find an array of scaled, some shelled, and all cold-blooded bodies keeping warm in the 100 plus degree temperatures just behind the glass from the cold outdoors. Come visit during the day to see Mali Uromastyx, Collared Lizards, Horned Lizards, Angel Island Chuckwallas, and the elusive Sand Skinks residing with young Star and Leopard Tortoises. In the evening you may see some Leopard Geckos coming out of their daytime slumber to find their late night meal. All of these animals and more can be found within this exciting addition everyday.
It’s that time of year and we have many new babies being hatched at Uptown Birds! Once babies are old enough to be displayed you can come visit them and observe their development as they transform from little down covered aliens to the beautiful and majestic birds you may recognize.
Current Hand-feeding Babies on Display:
Swainson Lorikeets, Yellow-bibbed Lory, Peachfaced Lovebirds in a variety of colors and more to be added in a few days!
